Virtual Run Info

We are excited to announce Winter Count 2020, a virtual run organized by Red Earth Running Company. Winter Count 2020 will be hosted from December 21-27. This virtual run coincides with the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere. It marks a seasonal shift when we will start to see more sunlight.

Winter Count is inspired by our relatives from the Northern Plains. It is a nod to winter counts, which are time honored tools used by Native families and communities to record significant events that happen throughout a year. Winter Count is an acknowledgment of this long-standing tradition of using a storytelling technique and art form to record and make meaning of events that happen throughout a year.

This year has been significant. It marks a new decade. Globally, people are also experiencing a once in a lifetime pandemic. This worldwide event has shifted some of our ways of being and doing. In many places, it has also changed the way we gather and run. We organized Winter Count to gather (virtually), run, and mark this moment together.

Running is a universal language and art form too. It reminds us of who we are, where we come from, and the experiences that connect us. Winter Count is about keeping track of what's important and reflecting about the significant experiences and events that will serve as historical reminders of this time. It's also about remembering and learning from these moments so we can pass on the stories and lessons to the people that matter most.

Follow these simple steps to sign up, run with us, and mark this moment:

  • Select your distance (half marathon, 10k or 5k) and register online before December 8th;

Winter Count is a virtual run. You can run, jog, or walk at any location. The course you choose is up to you. You can mark miles on a road, trail, or treadmill. Basically you get to run your own race, at your own pace, and on your own terms and schedule.

The virtual run is limited to 300 people. Registration is open at RunSignup until December 20 or until spots are filled. The registration fee includes a participant packet with a custom canvas bag, race t-shirt, and event bib. Registration closes at midnight on December 20 or when spots are filled.

All virtual run participants will receive a participant packet that includes a custom Winter Count 2020 canvas bag, t-shirt, and bib. The t-shirt is made from a soft, tri-blend fabric and is offered in unisex sizing. More detailed information about sizes can be found at our sizing guide. We highly recommend viewing the sizing chart to order the correct t-shirt size. We do not offer exchanges due to sizing errors once they ship.

Information for the virtual run will be updated regularly as it becomes available. You can find updates for Winter Count 2020 on this page.
